Breast Cancer: Race for the Cure Gift Ideas
A True Hero...
Give Gifts That Keep Giving
When shopping for gifts this year, whether it be for Christmas, a birthday, an anniversary or Just Because, why not choose a gift that also supports a major cause? I mean, if you were already going to buy your husband a tie; why not buy a tie that supports breast cancer research? That way he can be stylish and you can feel good about supporting one of the most worthwhile causes in the world.
Susan G. Komen
Susan G. Komen was a beautiful soul who battled with breast cancer. Her sister, Nancy G. Brinker, made a promise to her sister to do everything in her power to help end breast cancer. Aptly named, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, this foundation has achieved much success over the years but more work needs to be done. Everyone can do their part. It's not just about walking!!
Since Race for the Cure started the following has been achieved:
- Earlier detection of breast cancer through mammograms
- 98% survival rate of five years when caught early thanks to mammograms
- There is now more than $900 million invested in breast cancer research from the federal government
- There are more than 2.5 millions survivors of breast cancer in the United States
What is Breast Cancer?
To understand breast cancer, you need to understand what cancer is and how it works. Your body produces cells that go through a cycle: growing, division and cell death. As you get older your cells divide to replace damaged or dying cells only.
In cancer, the growth of cells are abnormal and grow out of control. They don't die out like normal cells, they just keep growing and growing and start to invade other parts of the body therefore spreading cancer to other parts of the body. Normal cells cannot invade other parts of the body, a hair cell is for hair, a skin cell is for skin and so forth. A cancer cell can infect the skin cells, brain cells, and of course, breast cells.....there you have it, breast cancer.
Cancer cells are not always tumors, such as leukemia, which is cancer of blood and bone marrow. Once cancer gets into the blood, it travels to other parts of the body and creates new tumors which replace normal cells. So you can have breast cancer and also have cancer spread to your brain. Or you can have lung cancer that also spreads to your liver. (Diagnosed cancer is named after the area of the body in which it originated , even if it spreads to other areas.)
Why Support Breast Cancer Research?
Susan G. Komen is made up of breast cancer survivors, advocates, activists and just plain ole folk that care. Take me for instance:
I don't have cancer.
I don't have any friends with cancer.
However, my father's mother died from breast cancer. My father's father died from lung cancer. My mother's mother died from lung cancer that spread to her brain. My maternal cousin was just diagnosed with leukemia. My dad was just diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Let's face it, cancer runs in my family.
So here I am, supporting Susan G. Komen.
Why should you support Susan G. Komen?
Because you can help save lives.
Because you can help increase awareness (which can help save lives).
Because you have breast cancer.
Because you know someone who has breast cancer.
Because you know someone who knows someone who has breast cancer.
Because you're a woman.
Because you're a man.
Because men can get breast cancer too. (Yes, they can and do.)
Whatever your reason is, just pick one and run with it. Why would you need a reason anyway? It's the right thing to do!
Did I mention you can help save lives?
"There's A Gift For That"
I know you're all familiar with the popular phrase for the iPhone "There's an app for that." Well, I propose something similar for Susan G. Komen, "There's a gift for that." Yes, there are gifts for just about anyone that will help support Race for the Cure. Are you the family chef? Need a new mixing bowl, blender, knives?
Don't quite know what to give someone who has everything? There are gift baskets, cameras, shirts, candles and so much more.
Christmas, Birthdays, Bar Mitvahs, Bat Mitvahs, Diwali, Ramadan, Hanukkah, Just Because, Get Well Soon, Mother's Day, Father's Day, President's Day, Veterans Day....doesn't really matter. There's a gift for that!

Smart Shopping
Come on, it's smart shopping to buy gifts that support breast cancer research. If you're going to buy candles for your home to decorate, why not buy a nice Komen candle? If your daughters' favorite color is pink, why not buy her a Komen t-shirt? You can feel good about giving a gift that actually gives twice.
